MEDIA RELEASE
The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) acknowledges the public’s concerns regarding the progress of the rehabilitation project on Lilian Ngoyi Street (formerly Bree Street) in the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD). To address these concerns, the Entity is taking swift action to rectify the issues causing the project’s delays.
The rehabilitation project, which began in January 2024, aims to restore the road and critical infrastructure following a gas explosion in July 2023. The project is divided into two phases, with the first phase expected to be completed in December 2024.
Despite previous interventions, the appointed contractor has had challenges meeting their contractual obligations. As a result, the JRA has issued a formal notice of intent to terminate the contract if the contractor does not rectify the situation.
This notice period, in accordance with the General Conditions of Contract (2015), Clause 9.2, commenced on the 23rd of July 2024 and allows the contractor 14 days to respond and rectify the default.
The Entity remains committed to delivering safe, accessible roads, and infrastructure to the public. We will ensure the project is completed to satisfactory standards and will provide further updates on the project’s recommencement and projected timelines once the contractor has responded to the notice.
During this process, continuous engagements with all impacted Stakeholders will take place in order to provide updates and reassurance on progress. JRA appreciates the cooperation and patience of residents, road users, and businesses in Wards 59, 60, and 124 and request their continued understanding during this period.
